Brother Hear How the Wind Comes In

In '35, some jobless vets were down in the Florida Keys
Camped in tents and barracks on Lower Matecumbe
Sent down south to earn their keep and to build  mew highway
They would face a mighty hurricane on that deadly Labor Day

Mama see how the rain comes in, flat, flat, flat
Pappa see how the clouds come in, low, low, low
Sister see how the waves come in, high, high, high
Brother hear how the wind comes in, blow, blow, blow

Now the Keys folk know their hurricanes, know just what to do
Run their boats to shelter and their families and livestock, too
But the veterans huddled by the railroad tracks were left to meet their fate
'Cause the rescue train from Homestead would be leaving much too late

Mama see how the rain comes in....

Six PM, water rising and the wind was a high mean hum
Faces peered from shuttered homes, stout hearts beat like drums
Eight PM, barometers still falling like the rain
And the vets heard a roar and a rumble like the sound of the rescue train

Mama see how the rain comes in....

The wind and the waves cut a ten mile swath through the Florida Keys that night
Buildings, bridges, docks and roads swept clean out of sight
Survivors, stunned and batterd, tallie up the frightful cost
Four hundred forty four found dead and many more just lost

Mama see how the rain comes in, flat, flat, flat
Pappa see how the clouds come in, low, low, low
Sister see how the waves come in, high, high, high
Brother hear how the wind comes in, blow, blow, blow
